Closing Eyes when Awake can Improve Your Memory

There is an easy and inexpensive way to enhance memory, close your eyes when you're resting awake. According to scientists, eyes closed awake after receiving new information may help the brain easily save the information.

"The formation of a new memory in the brain can not be completed in a matter of seconds. Activity you do the first few minutes after getting new information really affect how well you remember the information once a week," said Michaela Dewar, a psychologist at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland as MNN reported on Wednesday (07/25/2012).

Research conducted on 33 people ranging in age between 61 to 87 years. Study participants were asked to listen to two short stories for 15-30 minutes with the instruction to recall details of the story as much as possible from each story.

Participants were divided into two groups, where one group was asked to rest her eyes closed awake after listening to the story and the other group played a computer. Furthermore, participants were asked to describe what happened in each story.

Then the participants had to recall the details of the second story after 10 minutes and 7 days later. Participants in a group of people close my eyes more awake to remember about the story, even after a week later than the other groups.

The researchers suspect that as long as someone whose resting awake for 10 minutes after getting the information, the brain more easily consolidate memory had entered into long-term memory. Without memory consolidation, one can not forget the new information acquired.
